What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

The Niagara Peninsula has a climate ideally suited to the Chardonnay grape; a combination of hot summer days and cool nights allows the vines to ripen fruit slowly and evenly while retaining delicate aromatics and a balancing spine of natural acidity. Grapes for Gretzky Estate Winery’s inaugural vintage of Chardonnay are sourced primarily from vineyards in the Beamsville Bench region, where soils of higher limestone content impart additional layers of complexity. While the taste of lemon was more than evident, there was little else to back it up. Bland and flavorless, this one truly lacked the character of it’s namesake. To be fair, I’d say some of it could be attributed to the wine being far too cold when it arrived.
