Wattle Creek Syrah Blend Yorkville Highlands the Triple Play 2009

Member Review by jtryka:

The wine is a pleasant ruby color in the glass, and the nose exhibits notes of ripe red fruit, spicy pepper and a hint of mint over some very subtle oak. The taste is somewhat fruit forward, with a bit of blackberry jam on the outset, which transitions to some fresh herbs and mint midpalate. The tannins are very well structured, leading to a firm, dry finish that would complement a wide variety of grilled meats and savory dishes. Christopher and Kristine Williams were busy raising their family in Arizona when they received a call from a Sonoma County friend that would change their lives. A rare opportunity to purchase an Alexander Valley vineyard had presented itself and the Williams quickly boarded a plane to California in 1994 to view the property. They were captivated with the beauty of the area and the special nature of the hillside property which is bordered by the famed Russian River. Within a day they made the decision to purchase the magical 56 acres that later became Wattle Creek Winery. Family and dogs in tow, they relocated permanently to California in 2001 and dedicated themselves to making wine that they and their friends would enjoy. We're proud to produce wines that are almost exclusively Estate grown. You may not hear this term often, because many wineries purchase their grapes or their juice from outside the winery. Estate grown means that we have ultimate control over the quality and consistency of the wines which are made from our Alexander Valley and Yorkville Highlands vineyards. Chris and Kristine decide at harvest if the quality of a particular varietal is up to Wattle Creek standards. and if it's not. well, it doesn't go into a Wattle Creek bottle. It goes to the market to be sold to the other guys. Wattle Creek wines reflect the best and brightest of our vineyards. That's the only way we can guarantee to our customers and club members that they will receive the quality they've come to expect from Wattle Creek. Year in and year out. The Wattle Creek tasting room is located in San Francisco's historic Ghirardelli Square and is open seven days a week. We are open Monday through Saturday 11:00am-9:00pm Sunday 11:00am-7:00pm Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Super fruit bomb. A really rich berry treat that is perfect if you want that thick, luscious candy hit.

Winemaker's Notes: This Rhone blend presents terrific vibrant purple and red hues. The 2004 Triple Play shows aromas of black current and a sweet hint of raspberry combined with tarry molasses, anise and spicey oak. Blackberry flavors dominate with notes of smokey terroir, toasted oak and a black pepper nuance. This is a rich, well profiled and structured wine and will pair beautifully with a dry aged rib eye steak grilled to perfection and topped with gorgonzola! Blend: 93% Syrah, 4% Petite Sirah, 3% Viognier

When the owners of Wattle Creek winery in Alexander Valley wanted to expand their vineyard holdings they went directly north to the Yorkville Highlands in Mendocino. Their 125-acre vineyard has varied elevation with the very top planted to the Syrah and Petit Sirah that go into this lush red wine. It’s above the fog line so the vineyard gets brilliant sun light for ripening, but the high altitude and cooling breezes slow things down, bringing depth and complexity. A splash of Viognier is added for freshness in this unique blend. The make up is 93% Syrah, 4% Petite Sirah, 3% Viognier. This is a Rhone style blend that shows ripe black cherry, black pepper, licorice and cassis. On Sale for a limited time!
