Waterstone Merlot Napa Valley 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

"2009 proved to be a mild, relatively cool growing season. Without much frost nor many heat spikes, the lack of rain (2/3 of normal for the third consecutive year) did not present any challenges. Overall, the vintage provided extended hang time for the grapes without excessive ripeness, leading to forward, bright fruit with mature flavors and tannins. Sweet cherry, ripe plum, hints of vanilla and overtones of anise and aged leather appear in the aroma. On the palate, this generous wine features cherry, plum and blackberry fruit with supple tannins and a lingering finish." -Winery

Three vineyards, four Zinfandels and one shared passion for the pursuit of small lot, single-vineyard wines are the driving force behind one of California's newest wineries, Z-52 . Seasoned winemaker Philip Zorn and veteran wine executive Brent Shortridge wear all the hats at Z-52, and their dedication to distinctive Zinfandels is evident at every turn. The heart and soul of this boutique winery, named for the shared “Z” in both Zinfandel and Zorn, (the 52 references the 52 weeks in a vintage year, 52 rows in Agnes' Vineyard, and 52 cards in a full deck) is its commitment to producing high-end Zinfandels from some of the oldest vineyards in the Lodi and Amador County regions. Z-52 ‘s minimalist approach to winemaking embraces the notion that terroir and its influence on grape character is essential to producing outstanding Zinfandel. Read less

The nose shows some subtle dried bay leaf undertones and hints of lightly nutty oak framing rather fresh plum fruit. Restrained yet balanced. This enters the mouth with freshness and some precision, which unfolds with fine red plum and berry fruit over a light wash of oak spice and earthy elements. The acidity is juicy and the tannins crisp, adding to the balanced, transparent mouthfeel. The finish shows a little nervy edge and fine persistence to the cranberry-rhubarb flavors that continue to cover the oak right through the slightly nutty and cocoa-dusted finale. 91pts

A soft wine with some leather and black cherry. Really enjoyable and easy to drink. Stands up even against spicy food.
