Waterbrook Chardonnay Reserve 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells intensely of chapstick all camphory and with a hint of menthol. Waxy and with smoky, cedary nuance but it has the weirdly sweet and floral aromas of classic chapstick. With air this turns more typically oaky, the chapstick fading but not disappearing. In the mouth its a fairly big wine that is admirably light on its feet. There’s some lovely wax streaked peachy fruit early on the palate that turns finely apple flavored on the mid-palate. There’s a hint of oak here, really just a kiss that adds an underlying cinnamon edge to the fruit making this taste like Applejacks cereal a bit. Yes, chapstick and applejacks. Weird but it works fairly well. This has a nice tense texture to it and it finishes with a bit more obvious wood lending a subtle sweet edge to earth and tart apple fruit. An off wine but not unappealing, particularly texturally. 86pts
