Waterbrook Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley Reserve 2009

Member Review by jtryka:

The wine itself is a nice inky indigo in the glass leading to some garnet along the edges. The nose is a fountain of ripe fruit, blueberries, cherries, prune and cassis, projecting a sweeter, almost jammy aroma. The fruit is overlaid with some lovely notes of toasted oak, cocoa powder and some earthy aromas of forest floor. The taste is very fruit forward, but much more complex than I was expecting from such a fruit centered wine. There is a good bit of ripe fruit at the outset, blueberries, black currant and plum that washes over you in your first sip, but the fruit subsides and transitions nicely to some raw minerality midpalate. The tannins are structured but not overwhelming, providing a nice foundation for the long, dry and velvety finish. Given to me by a close friends Dave&Lizz who know their stuff. When I initially poured some into the proper glass, I immediately looked around for the aroma police, this wine had too much aroma. It went on to a lovely current taste which coated my entire mouth with flavor followed by a nice blueberry hint and then a cedar flavor and a nice oaky taste which I love ending with a slight smoke which played the highest note on the piano.

Inviting blueberry aromas couple with cedar and slate notes on the nose. The rich, developed palate presents mulberry and currant with well integrated tannins.

A very fine effort, with classic cassis and black cherry in the fruit core, but also offering interesting details of bark, earth and herb. The wine lingers, perhaps due to excellent natural acidity, and without overpowering the palate it keeps tantalizing it with nuances of moist earth and wet rock.

On the lighter side, with pretty currant and floral aromas and flavors that glow nicely through a thin veil of tannins, finishing with polish. Drink now through 2014.
