What to Expect

Port wine is one of the great dessert wines of the world. Based on a blend that usually features Touriga Nacional, vintage Port is a rich red wine witch is fortified with grape spirits. It combines the chewy, tannic bite of red wine with a sweetness that helps buffer the added alcohol and supports the spicy plum and dark berry fruits. Vintage Port is capable of aging and improving for decades. Other types of Port include Ruby Port, which is enjoyed in its youth for it fresh fruit, Tawny Port, which has been aged in wood for years giving it its tawny color and progressively nuttier flavors as the wine increases in age, and Colheita port, which is a Tawny Port from a single vintage.

Product Notes:
A great surprise for the vintage. Displays fabulous concentration and complex character with it layers of very sweet fruit, chocolate and cherry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins. Long finish with plenty of grip. Beautiful wine.
The Wine Advocate One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters read more...should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port.

Food Pairing:
Port is fortified wine from the Douro Valley, Portugal. The term "port" can only refer to these wines, much like French regions lay claim to certain titles. Being fortified, port is high in alcohol and is normally drunk from small glasses, in sips. Port should be served around 65 degrees, and the glass should only be half filled.
A sweet wine, Port is normally consumed after dinner. Served in a cordial glass, it is sipped, rather than drunk, from a wine glass. Sipping slows down the assimilation of alcohol into the bloodstream. What about serving food with Port after dinner? The richness of the wine is enhanced by serving nuts, dried fruit, and cheese. Chocolate is a double-barreled favorite, but notice that dark chocolate is a better match than sweet milk chocolate.

Port wine is a sweet fortified wine from Portugal. Although many port-style wines are made around the world, the strict usage of the terms Port or Porto refer only to wines produced in Portugal.
