This superb Russian River winery is run by a dedicated Burgundy aficionado, Stephen Hansel, whose goal is to produce Burgundian-styled Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from his Russian River vineyards. With more than 80 acres under vine, and an outstanding track record dating back to 1978, Hansel has not let success go to his head as prices remain reasonable. The medium to full-bodied 2004 Pinot Noir Cahill Lanersquo;s dark ruby color is accompanied by sweet aromas of plums, pomegranates, and flowers, a savory mid-palate, and loads of glycerin and intensity. It should drink beautifully for 8ndash;10 years.
The dark ruby-colored 2001 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane (747 cases made from Dijon clones 114 and 115) offers sweet cherry notes intermixed with notions of apple skins and Provencal herbs in a medium to full-bodied, ripe yet elegant, tasty, savory style. It is best consumed over the next 3ndash;4 years.
Vivid red. Deep, smoky aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and licorice, with a sexy rose nuance adding complexity. The dark fruit notes repeat on the palate, which is velvety, seductively sweet and gently framed by fine-grained tannins. The most concentrated of these pinots, with impressively deep dark fruit character and excellent finishing thrust.
Beautiful black raspberry and black cherry fruit as well as forest floor jump from the glass of the 2007 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane. Made from Dijon clones 115 and 114, as well as some of the Rochioli heritage clone, this is a full-bodied beauty, with medium ruby/plum color, lots of sweet fruits, and plenty of earthiness in a decidedly Burgundian style, perhaps a Cote de Nuits. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
Backward, with a high acid profile, the dark ruby/plum-tinged 2002 Pinot Noir Cahill Lane exhibits black fruits as well as a meaty, autumnal, soil-like character. Sweet plum, pomegranate, and black cherry fruit also emerge from this cuvee. While it possesses considerable soul and character, it is less evolved than its younger siblings. It should drink well for 7ndash;10 years.

Energetic and precise, offering sweet strawberry and raspberry flavors and a refreshing jolt of smoky minerals. The floral note builds on the sappy, focused, very persistent finish. I suspect that this vivacious pinot will age well on its balance. (May 2012)
