Walter Hansel 'South Slope' Pinot Noir 2015

External Review:

The 2010 Pinot Noir South Slope is considerably firmer than the 2009. Firm, yet well-balanced tannins support cinnamon, cloves, dark cherries and licorice. The 2010 shows excellent energy and verve, but it naturally needs time in bottle to come toget... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. It is bordered to the north by the Santa Rosa Creek and to the west by a tributary of the Russian River known as the Laguna de Santa Rosa. This location is ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as the nights and mornings are cooled by coastal fog yet the mid-days warm up to perfect grape ripening temperatures. Temperature swings of 40 degrees are very common. Read less

Bright ruby. Deep, vibrant aromas of black raspberry, red cherry, rose petal, black pepper and oak spices. Densely packed but sharply delineated, with juicy, intense dark berry and cherry compote flavors. For an ample wine this comes as shockingly linear. Finishes with ripe tannins, excellent persistence and a clinging floral note.

The 2009 Pinot Noir The South Slope comes from the highest elevation parcel owned by Hansel, a 7-acre sector planted with Dijon Clone 777. Another impressive Pinot, it exhibits a more full-bodied, intense style with lots of black cherry, raspberry, foresty, floral notes, a sensational texture, a rich, concentrated, opulent mouthfeel, and a long, luxurious finish. This stunning Pinot Noir is already providing plenty of pleasure and it should continue to do so for 7–8 years.

From Dijon clone 777, the 2007 Pinot Noir South Slope is from the highest elevation of any of the Hansel vineyards (and there are 80 acres). It has deep plum and pomegranate notes with hints of sassafras and wood spice. The wine displays a nice, subtle smokiness, medium to full body, good acidity, and a long finish. Unfortunately, there is very little made. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.
