Walter Hansel Pinot Noir North Slope Vineyard Russian River Valley 2015

Member Review by vin0vin0:

Big and lovely Russian River Pinot. Layers of dark fruit, allspice, stewed prunes, lively mouth watering acidity, a touch of smoke on the nose, chewy fine grained tannins and a fairly long finish.

Bright burst of fruit up front. Long smooth finish with well balanced feel in the mouth. Really enjoyed this during thanksgiving.

I first visited Walter Hansel Winery in June, 2007. The vineyard manager, Jesse Torress, himself a gifted winemaker, led me on a tour of the shockingly small facility. I say shockingly small because a wine this big I expected to come with a big facility. Not so. I tasted some new wines in their kitchen and was bowled over. Big Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, especially the 2005 North Slope. To my delight the owner, Stephen Hansel, drove up. What a thrill to meet him at "his" place! Walter Hansel wines are my favorites, and I will never forget that day. If you like big, bold, and living wine, Hansel Winery is for you. The Pinot Noir I tasted (North Slope 2005) is dreamy, with spice, hints of oak and dark cherry, and a very smooth finish. The Chardonnay (same appelation and vintage) is what some might call the old fashioned Chard... creamy, buttery, oakey, but with light vanilla and earth tones. My cellar is NEVER without a Walter Hansel wine, and it never will be.

Rich, opulent, "in-your-face" new-world style. Black cherry and other dark fruits on a velvety smooth palate, with a long finish and good balance. Very food-friendly. Based on the price point, Hansel pinots -and especially South Slope - has become one of my favorite California pinots year after year.

The 2012 Pinot Noir North Slope (1,344 cases produced) is made from Dijon clone 115, and small yields of under two tons of fruit per acre. Its lovely perfume, which reveals scents of rose petals, black cherries, blackcurrants and a subtle hint of oak, is followed by a wine with a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and a savory, flavorful, beautifully textured, sexy style. It comes across like a premier cru from the Côte de Beaune. This realistically priced, high-quality Pinot Noir should drink well for a decade or more.

The 2012 Pinot Noir North Slope is a big step up from the South Slope, which is remarkable, as the two parcels are separated by just four feet at the closest point. A rich, textured wine, the North Slope fleshes out with magnificent depth and power. Dark red and purplish toned fruit, smoke, tobacco and bacon all add complexity, but it is the wine’s total sense of harmony that truly stands out. This is a gorgeous wine from Hansel, and an even better value.

Bright ruby-red. Red berries and fresh rose on the fragrant nose and in the mouth. Juicy and precise, with good clarity and lift. Silky tannins give shape to the clinging finish, with the floral element repeating. This precocious pinot is drinking very nicely right now.

The 2011 Pinot Noir North Slope is delicate, sensual and totally beautiful from the very first taste. Here it is the wine’s silkiness that stands out most. Sweet red berries, flowers and mint all flow through to the finish. This is a decidedly restrained version of the North Slope. Crushed flowers, tobacco and plums add complexity on the finish. My overall impression is that the 2011 will be an early drinker because of its modest structure, especially vis-a-vis the 2010. At the same time, it is impossible to miss the wine’s energy. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2017.

Vivid ruby-red. High-pitched raspberry and floral aromas are complemented by notes of star anise, allspice and mace. Tangy acidity adds lift and cut to intense raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors, which pick up a floral character on the back half. Lively and precise on the energetic finish, which lingers with excellent spicy persistence.

Bright red fruit and expressive floral aromatics jump from the glass in the 2010 Pinot Noir North Slope. Deeply spiced notes of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves follow, adding nuance. In the glass, it is amazing to see how different the Hansel Pinots are from each other. Layers of fruit build to an exuberant, flashy finish that is pure Russian River. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2020.

Pure and juicy, with vivid, silk-textured blackberry and wild berry flavors, featuring fine-grained tannins that grip the flavors. Drink now through 2022.
