Walter Hansel Pinot Noir North Slope Reserve 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Robert Parker: Combining quality with reasonable prices and estate-grown grapes, you can't do much better than Stephen Hansel's Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. This vineyard begins four feet from the end of the South Slope and continues to slope to the north. It is 100% French clone 115. The close proximity to the South Slope does not influence these flavors as clone 115 exhibits the most fruit driven flavors and appears more New World than French.

It is bordered to the north by the Santa Rosa Creek and to the west by a tributary of the Russian River known as the Laguna de Santa Rosa. This location is ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as the nights and mornings are cooled by coastal fog yet the mid-days warm up to perfect grape ripening temperatures. Temperature swings of 40 degrees are very common. Read less

The 2012 Pinot Noir North Slope is a big step up from the South Slope, which is remarkable, as the two parcels are separated by just four feet at the closest point. A rich, textured wine, the North Slope fleshes out with magnificent depth and power. Dark red and purplish toned fruit, smoke, tobacco and bacon all add complexity, but it is the wine’s total sense of harmony that truly stands out. This is a gorgeous wine from Hansel, and an even better value.

The 2012 Pinot Noir North Slope (1,344 cases produced) is made from Dijon clone 115, and small yields of under two tons of fruit per acre. Its lovely perfume, which reveals scents of rose petals, black cherries, blackcurrants and a subtle hint of oak, is followed by a wine with a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and a savory, flavorful, beautifully textured, sexy style. It comes across like a premier cru from the Côte de Beaune. This realistically priced, high-quality Pinot Noir should drink well for a decade or more.
