Walnut Crest Merlot 2015

Member Review by timothy14214:

Robust. More complex than Sutter Home, refreshing for the table with any meal; so far.

Rafael and José Guilisasti were visionaries in the late 1990s when they saw that the market was beginning to change and that consumers worldwide were becoming more aware of the products they were consuming, not only for health reasons, but also with respect to their social and environmental impacts. They therefore asked winemaking consultant Alvaro Espinoza to join them in the process of converting a conventional Chilean winery into one that was 100% organic and biodynamic with the firm objective of creating wines of the highest quality with great respect for nature. Now, after more than a decade, what began as a dream has become a complete portfolio of wines backed by major national and international awards and recognition and that meet the new need of today’s consumers. Just an amazing value. Nice plummy fruit balanced against a light touch of oak. The tannins are ripe and ready.

The 1997 Merlot is somewhat herbaceous, but ripe and soft, with low acidity, and a round, flat attack. Nevertheless, there is good fruit, and plenty of glycerin in an easy-going, understated style.

Walnut Crest Merlot is one of those little gifts of the wine world: a real red wine for just what you'd hoped to pay for it. It's always been a good wine; this vintage seems a little better. Typically Rapel in its smoothness and fine grape flavors of cassis, it also has a light touch of caramelized oak to balance. This is nothing more than a fresh, light and easy Chilean Merlot that does everything right. The sooner you drink it, the more you'll get out of it.

This Chilean wine is generous, harmonious and lush, with plenty of plum and cassis flavors wrapped around ripe tannins and well-integrated notes of toast and smoke. A bargain at twice the price.

The 1996 Merlot Reserve Estate Selection is a chunkier, fleshier wine with a dark ruby/plum color, low acidity, surprisingly fine extract, and a chocolate, herb-tinged, berry fruitiness that coats the palate. the wine is husky and lacks definition, but it provides a plump mouthful of red wine.

Primary grape flavors and a touch of black, tarry tannin combine in this lightly herbal merlot, made for a good grilled burger.

A soft red with cherry and eucalyptus scents, this gentle, fruity wine is ready for pork chops off the grill.
