Voss Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A little smoky and decidedly grassy on the nose which is pungent and kind of precise with its fine quince and grapefruit aromas. Just a touch diffuse on entry, this is bright and tart on the palate with subtly layered flavors of green herbs, green citrus zest and ripe apple fruit. This is almost silky in the mouth and the balance makes this seem deceptively simple but this is a very complete, subtle bottle that will prove too subtle for some but for my palate this is a great summer sipper. The finish is long and sapid, with a salty edge to the lemon rind flavors. this is delicious. 89ps

Voss Vineyards was conceived and founded by Robert Hill Smith, a fifth-generation member of the Hill Smith family in Australia who also own the Nautilus Estate in Marlborough, New Zealand, and the famous Yalumba Winery in the Barossa region of South Australia. Robert was intrigued by the Napa Valley and saw quality and opportunity in the viticulture around Rutherford and Oakville, wondering whether he could apply some of the knowledge garnered over the 100+ years of family involvement in winemaking. Robert sought out the best fruit available for his new winery, buying Chardonnay from Carneros and Zinfandel from the Alexander Valley. In 1994 we changed the varietal mix to include Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot from Rutherford, as well as Shiraz. The Rutherford grapes came from the San Mateo Ranch, so named for a land grant when this area was owned by Mexico. In 1996 Voss Vineyards purchased the San Mateo Ranch and in so doing locked in this valuable resource. In addition to the Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot on the vineyard, Syrah (Shiraz) was planted in 1997 to give more control over the farming. We continue to purchase grapes from select key vineyards to complement our own fruit, but by managing our own vineyard we are able to control yields and farm for flavor. This intense vineyard management, combined with innovative winemaking skills, shows in the accolades the wines receive. Early on Voss Vineyards established itself as the leader in a new style of California Sauvignon Blanc. In 1998 the wine won "Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World" at the International Wine and Spirits Competition and "Best of Show" at the World Wine Championships. With a limited production currently at about 8,000 cases, using meticulous care in the vineyard, and having priced our wines fairly, Voss Vineyards is in a unique and advantageous position for a Napa Valley winery. This is intensely aromatic with assertive aromas of cut grass, grapefruit, lime and an underlying roasted chili note. Light bodied and beautifully balanced, this is perhaps a touch softer in the mouth than I might prefer but at the same time it’s subtle and ethereal delivering finely balanced grapefruit, green chili and green cardamom spice notes on the palate and through the long finish. A bit simple perhaps but with lovely clarity and freshness.  87pts

A nice sauvignon blanc, if a bit one dimensional, heavy on the pink grapefruit with a little bit of herbal freshness. We had it with roast chicken and greek salad, which was a good match for the wine.

Vibrant aromas of gooseberry and passion fruit herald a fresh, fruity white wine that's downright fun to drink. The flavors are interestingly complex, with layers of grapefruit, lemon and lime that play long on the finish. Ready to drink, and more than fairly priced for this quality. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Phenomenal flavors packed tightly in this well-balanced Sauvignon Blanc. A richer, riper style with juicy pineapple, honeydew melon and pink grapefruit accented by lemongrass and a spritz of lime. Taste like a fresh fruit cocktail, there are so many tastes to savor in this delicious wine. Outstanding quality.

Wonderful pear and peach flavors are ripe and generous, with a tangy acidity and hints of fresh herbs. The focus and intensity persist on the finish. Drink now.

Somewhat outspoken, with melon, grass, herbs, celery, honey and citrus flavors circulating freely. An interesting melange.

This delicious 1997 Sauvignon Blanc is dominated by its distinctive mango/melony, guava-like fruit character. Crisp and medium-bodied, with a textured feel on the palate, this is a wine to drink over the next 12-18 months.

A great wine for summer! The sauvignon blanc displays a wide variety of flavors from tropical fruits to peach. A fantastic choice to pair with lighter summer foods.
