Voss Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

We grow the fruit for our Sauvignon Blanc on the Voss Vineyards estate in Rutherford and two nearby blocks with similar soil profiles. We also source fruit from two other distinguished vineyards, one in Oakville and one in Yountville. The Rutherford site produces grapes of intensely perfumed tropical fruit character. The Oakville and Yountville vineyards impart good acidity and citrus and mineral flavors.

Voss Vineyards was conceived and founded by Robert Hill Smith, a fifth-generation member of the Hill Smith family in Australia who also own the Nautilus Estate in Marlborough, New Zealand, and the famous Yalumba Winery in the Barossa region of South Australia. Robert was intrigued by the Napa Valley and saw quality and opportunity in the viticulture around Rutherford and Oakville, wondering whether he could apply some of the knowledge garnered over the 100+ years of family involvement in winemaking. Robert sought out the best fruit available for his new winery, buying Chardonnay from Carneros and Zinfandel from the Alexander Valley. In 1994 we changed the varietal mix to include Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot from Rutherford, as well as Shiraz. The Rutherford grapes came from the San Mateo Ranch, so named for a land grant when this area was owned by Mexico. In 1996 Voss Vineyards purchased the San Mateo Ranch and in so doing locked in this valuable resource. In addition to the Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot on the vineyard, Syrah (Shiraz) was planted in 1997 to give more control over the farming. We continue to purchase grapes from select key vineyards to complement our own fruit, but by managing our own vineyard we are able to control yields and farm for flavor. This intense vineyard management, combined with innovative winemaking skills, shows in the accolades the wines receive. Early on Voss Vineyards established itself as the leader in a new style of California Sauvignon Blanc. In 1998 the wine won "Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World" at the International Wine and Spirits Competition and "Best of Show" at the World Wine Championships. With a limited production currently at about 8,000 cases, using meticulous care in the vineyard, and having priced our wines fairly, Voss Vineyards is in a unique and advantageous position for a Napa Valley winery. Lively, with racy grass, passion fruit, tangerine and nectarine flavors, finishing with a soft, spicy citrus edge. Drink now through 2003.

Attractive lemony, melon, and citrus aromas sour from the glass of the 1998 Sauvignon Blanc. It offers copious melon flavors (and perhaps kiwi), medium body, an intense personality, and an attractive texture. Drink this Sauvignon over the next year.

Characterful Sauvignon Blanc may not be a common find from California, but this is Voss' second outstanding Sauvignon Blanc ion the last three years. Vibrant aromas of gooseberry and passion fruit herald a fresh, fruity wine that's downright fun to drink.

Grapefruit mixed with honey and some green vegetables welcome you in, white the intriguing palate provides citrus, more honey, apricots and even some scallions. Simple and straightforward it's not; but it is fairly easy to drink. Served chilled on the front porch during the summer.

Quite fragrant - its aromas a blend of passion fruit, fig and fresh-mowed hay. On the palate, this California white is full-bodied yet light, its flavors ripe and fresh, adding lemon and grapefruit to the equation. Delicious and fun. Drink now.

Somewhat outspoken, with melon, grass, herbs, celery, honey and citrus flavors circulating freely. An interesting melange.

Phenomenal flavors packed tightly in this well-balanced Sauvignon Blanc. A richer, riper style with juicy pineapple, honeydew melon and pink grapefruit accented by lemongrass and a spritz of lime. Taste like a fresh fruit cocktail, there are so many tastes to savor in this delicious wine. Outstanding quality.
