Vintage: 2001 05/22/2011

One of our favorites from the Mosel, these wines are incredibly long-lived. Due to the awesome ripeness of the 1999 vintage, this Auslese is surprisingly accessible but still years away from maturity. Has all the virtues of a perfect Riesling from Grunhaus - fruitiness, finesse, wonderfully intense aromas and youthful freshness.

A paradox. Smells and tastes exotic, with orange, violet and almond flavors, yet seems a bit artificial at the same time. Settles down with aeration; the vibrant structure holds promise for the future. Best from 2003 through 2012.

The aromas here are fascinating and complex: mirabelle plum, musk, white peach and sweet green herbs. In the mouth, there is a much more intense spiciness that with the Abtsberg Spätlese. While relatively sweet, it packs a decisive load of slate in the finish.

Vintage: 2001 09/27/2011

Heady and over-the-top, this is Riesling at the very extreme. It starts with fruit flavors, nectarripe and perfumed, and then transforms them into floral essences, purple and potent. It's huge and heavy with purple plum, damask rose and dusty lilac notes, yet is enlivened with an acidity that buzzes like a bee crazy for the nectar in all those flowers. Wild stuff, this needs time and food - perhaps veal or its sweetbreads.
