Editorial Reviews for Vinum Chenin Blanc
Pungent, smoky and oaky on the nose with a strong underlay of white flowers, very fresh gardenias. There’s a touch of fruit here, mostly citrussy and a bit indistinct. Round on entry with cutting acids buffered by a touch of sweetness. It’s got plenty of body for a medium weight wine and much less oak than the aromas suggest. Wow, is there a lot of acid here, with gentle flavors of quince, white peach, and under-ripe pineapple that get etched into the palate and onto the steely finish. I love acid, but this seems a bit much even for me, though the finish is cleansing and refreshing. 84pts

Sesame and curry in the nose, with an underlying smokiness. The mouth is mildly acidic and sweet, and the oak flavors carry it pretty well. Not crazy about the aftertaste, but its interesting.
nose complete with oak, vanilla, touches of pear and golden apples, a little woodsy, like burnt popcorn. the palate is also filled with buttered popcorn, apple, oaky characteristics...completely different than the chenin blanc I just had previously, but enjoyable in its own right
California Chardonnay doppelganger, but with a little more grass and steel on the finish. The nose is musty with bruised fruit. The flavor is mealy and broad with banana and soft red apple. The finish is complex but a little chemical. Interesting wine.
I would say around 30-40% oaked, this is a relatively rare example of a good oaked Chenin Blanc, in the style of the Vergelegen, Graham Beck and Sterhuis steens. There definitely is more than a hint of the toasty Chardonnay about this but the fruit is more energetic, more tropical, and the oak is actually very nicely integrated for a relatively young wine. The fresh zesty nature of the Chenin means it's still relatively easy drinking but the oak adds a nice buttery rounded mouth to the wine. Good with seafood.
External Reviews for Vinum Chenin Blanc
Plump aromas of fresh lime, white flowers and a touch of vanilla bean from the oak aging. There's more Chenin Blanc under vine in South Africa than any other variety. Vinum's offers more than just everyday appeal, it's versatile with foods too - anything from seafood stew to pork dumplings.
Winemaker's Notes:
These mature, prime vineyards are located on the slopes of the magnificent Helderberg Mountain, facing the ocean, in a southwesterly and south-easterly orientation. They consistently produce some of the finest Chenin grapes in the Stellenbosch Region, where the great Chenins of South Africa are produced. All picking and sorting by hand. The bunches were then de-stemmed, very gently pressed in a pneumatic bag press, and the juice settled in chilled stainless steel tanks prior to fermentation. This took place mainly in tank, on the lees, with less than 5% being transferred into small, new Burgundian barrels. Kept on the lees for six months, with regular batonnage, both in tank and in barrel, ultimate freshness was preserved, whilst developing considerable fruit complexity and depth in the wine; achieving a wonderful minerality on the palate. Bottled young, after seven months maturation, the wine retains lively fruit, steely acidity and abundant aromatic concentration: the exact qualities you'd expect from beautiful old vines. The nose hints at the wonderful elegance of this wine. White petals, citrus crispness, gentle vanilla, spicy cinnamon. The palate unfolds layers of fresh lime, deep, opulent fruitiness, and tingling spices -all wrapped in very subtle and harmonious notes of French oak, hanging on the palate with a mineral resonance. In essence, it has immense personality. A wonderfully balanced combination of the finer attributes of good Cape Chenin.
