Vintage Port Dow Halbe 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

Dow’s Vintage Ports are only produced in years of exceptional quality and represent only a very small part of the total company’s production in that year. On average only two or three times every ten years are the weather conditions sufficiently good to allow for the making of Dow’s Vintage Port. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Dow’s Vintage Ports have been landmark wines in virtually every great year, consistently setting the standards amongst all Port houses. Vintage Ports such as the remarkable Dow 1896, the 1927, 1945, 1955, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1980 and the Dow read more... 1994 are all legends in the history of this great wine. These Ports are still magnificent today, even when 50 or over 100 years old. Few wines can claim this quality and this pedigree. Dow's Vintage Ports are drawn from the companies' finest vineyards; Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta de Senhora da Ribeira. Each property contributes to the Dow’s unique and distinctive style. When young, Dow’s Vintage Ports are purple-black, austere, complex and intensely concentrated, full-bodied and balanced with very fine peppery tannins.

Currently six members of the Symington family are fully engaged in the management of Dow’s, they represent the 12th and 13th generations involved in the Port trade via their great grandmother Beatrice Atkinson and over 350 years since their ancestors played a significant role in laying the foundations of the Port trade. Together with the family’s other Port firms, Dow’s is the only surviving independent Port producer in the hands of just one family amongst all the great historic Port companies. Following the great investments made in vineyards in the late 19th century, the company was one of the first to build a modern winery in the region in 1964, later to be adapted to become one of the first wineries with temperature control in all its fermentation tanks. In 1997, the company built a new winery at Quinta do Sol, widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative in Portugal. This was a major investment for the Symington family. The company’s commitment to top quality vineyard ownership, winemaking and the finest Ports remains at the heart of this family business. Peter Symington and his son Charles, Dow’s principal wine makers, have between them been nominated ‘Fortified Wine Maker of the Year’ at the International Wine Challenge a record seven times. These awards are testament to Dow’s reputation as one of the finest premium Port producers. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

An opaque blue/purple color (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.(Wine Advocate)

A sweet and tannic wine, with mineral, berry and black cherry character and hints of green tobacco. Full-bodied, with fine tannins. Long finish. Tight and racy. 9,000 cases made. Score range: 92-94 (JS) Wine Spectator. A Port wine from Douro in Portugal. 2000 Dow Vintage Port 750ml
