The 2006 G5 from the D.O. of Madrid is purple-colored with a slightly roasted character featuring black cherry and black raspberry aromas and flavors. Plush and layered with a bit of underlying structure, this tasty Garnacha has 2andndash;3 years of aging potential but will be hard to resist early on. This is an excellent value to drink over the next three years.
G5 is 100% Garnacha sourced from 120 year old vines. The wine was fermented and raised in stainless steel. The nose reveals fragrant aromas of black cherry and earth notes. Ripe, sweet, and full-flavored on the palate, this lengthy effort can be enjoyed over the next three years.
The 2005 G5 from Madrid is from a higher altitude vineyard with a longer growing season. It has the most expressive perfume of the five wines, plenty of supple fruit, and a seamless flow across the palate. Drink it over the next 2 years.
Inky ruby. Floral-accented blackberry on the nose, with a cracked pepper quality adding verve. Sweet, straightforward dark berry flavors are gently supported by silky tannins. Finishes with good clarity and punch, turning firmer with time in the glass.
The extraordinary 2004 G5 Garnacha (from 80-120-year old vines) is pure kirsch liqueur, reminiscent of some of the older-styled Chateau Rayas Chateauneuf de Papes. (However, when is the last time anyone paid $13 for a bottle of Rayas? Perhaps 1959?) This is a super, elegant, pure effort offering that wonderful liquid minerality and raspberry kirsch liqueur-like component that makes Rayas so special. The good news is that production is around 2,500 cases. Run... don't walk to latch onto a few bottles of this beauty! It should drink well for 5-6 years.
Deep ruby. Rich, ripe, spicy aromas of blackberry and cassis, with an exotic floral topnote. Lush, sweet, peppery flavors of blackcurrant and boysenberry display impressive depth and power. No tannins here, just explosive, liqueur-like dark berry fruit. Finishes sweet, pure and long. The vines here are reportedly 120 years old.
