Vinos Blancos de Castilla Marqués de Riscal Limousin 2005
Marqués de Riscal, the oldest Rioja house, has for many years been a leading and pioneering company in the wine producing sector. As far back as 1858, it became the first winery in Rioja to produce wines following the Bordeaux method, and in 1972 it was the first winery to promote the Rueda Designation of Origin, where it produced its famous Marqués de Riscal white wines. Marqués de Riscal sells its products in 80 countries and its wines enjoy the highest international distinctions as well as numerous awards and mentions in the media. Marqués de Riscal Reserva wines are predominantly made from grapes from Tempranillo vines over 15 years of age, grown in the best clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa. Riscal Reservas spend around two years in American-oak casks, producing a wine which corresponds to the classic Rioja style: fresh, fine, elegant and very suitable for laying down for many years. This 'Rioja Reserva' shows a dark cherry colour with good depth. Balsamic aromas with hints of ripe fruit on the nose and a fresh and light attack, with soft, rounded tannins. This Rioja is spicy and complex, the finish is persistent with subtle toasted oak character. It is elegant, fresh and easy to drink. Try with ham, mild cheeses, casseroles which are not too spicy, pulse dishes, poultry, red meat, grilled and roast meat.

Here you immediately notice the roots that fine rioja has in the Bordeaux trade. An elegant reminder of past, present and future. Soft, elegant with warm fruit and integrated oak. Intensity provided by grapes from old vines but without the excess of some modern winemaking. The 15% cabernet sauvignon adds to the Bordeaux feeling. Excellent vintage.
Faint, sour cherries, with some wood shavings on the nose. Strong vanilla character on the palate with sour pomegranate, cherries, and mild oak. Light to medium in texture. Nice medium finish shows off its robust acidity. 90 points.

Incredibly balanced. Wonderful fruit, but not overwhelming. Medium bodied with notes of raspberry and a bit of coca. Superb, long tannic finish. Wine displays amazing structure and really opened up after about an hour. Must be decanted to fully appreciate the complexity and balance in this wine. Stands up to even $100+ Bordeaux.
