Big, ripe, colorful and attractive, with leather and earth on the nose. The mouthfeel is a touch clanky, while the black fruit palate is broad and masculine as it shows a few holes in the fabric. With vanilla and mocha late, this is a nice Malbec with full tannins and grip.
A ripe and flattering style, with fruitcake and spice notes up front, followed by creamy, inviting blueberry, boysenberry and licorice flavors that linger through the finish. Nice buried acidity keeps it all together. Drink now through 2010.
Mendel's 2007 Malbec was sourced from a 45-acre parcel of 80-year-old vines in Lujan de Cuyo and aged for 12 months in French oak. Purple-colored, it displays an alluring bouquet of cedar, spice box, violets, and black cherry. Medium-bodied and elegant on the palate, it has plenty of savory fruit, cinnamon and allspice notes, excellent depth and concentration, and a fruit-filled finish. This stylish effort will evolve for 2-3 years and deliver prime drinking from 2011 to 2019.
The entry-level 2006 Malbec was sourced from a 78-year-old estate vineyard, aged for 12 months in 40% new French oak, and bottled without fining or filtration. Purple-colored, it exhibits an impressive nose of wood smoke, tobacco, rose petal, blueberry, and black raspberry. This leads to a medium-bodied wine in which notes of cola, coffee, and caramel emerge on the palate. Elegantly styled, with racy flavors, good balance, and a pure finish, it will evolve for 2-3 years but can be enjoyed now.
Crafted by Roberto de la Mota, the former winemaker at Terrazas de Los Andes, this malbec feels made for winter nights by the fireplace. It's chocolatey and full of dark cherry flavor, its firm structure needing time in the bottle or something meaty, like lamb roasted with rosemary.
Bright ruby. Blackberry, violet, licorice and a tarry nuance on the nose. Fresh and suave, with good acid cut giving verve to the black fruit and violet flavors. Not yet particularly complex but this is a juicy and vibrant wine with very good finishing lift. Tannins are firm but ripe. The winemaker here is Roberto de la Mota, previously at Terrazas de los Andes.
The 2005 Malbec was sourced from a 77 year old ungrafted vineyard, and aged for 12 months in 40% new French oak. It is opaque purple-colored with aromas of smoke, toast, violets, and black raspberry. Supple, ripe, and layered, it is firmly structured with well-concealed tannins. It will evolve for 3-5 years and drink well through 2025.
