Vinha da Defesa Branco Alentejo 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Powerful and ripe on the nose with savory black olive and spicy peppercorn notes framing deep blackberry fruit with hints of vanilla and fresh cut cedar. Smooth and fairly rich on entry with a soft yet decisive mouthfeel. There's plenty of fruit here. Slightly dried berry fruit is framed with well judged oak and topped with herbal, savory black olive and beef jerky notes and late arriving candied elements. The finish is fairly vibrant and long with a touch of heat, nice, savory blue floral aromatics and a lingering chocolate cigar box spice note. This is a powerful wine and one that might benefit from 2-3 years in the cellar. 90pts

In the heart of Alentejo region, 180 Km east of Lisbon, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, the Herdade do Esporão was aquired by Finagra with the main porpuse of producing wines of great quality. From 1975 until 1979, the Herdade do Esporão was occupied during the revolutionary and agricultural periods. Only after this period Finagra was allowed to proceed the winery project. Our modern cellars were built in 1987. A new stage of Finagra project was acomplished. In 1989 the first wine "Esporão" was considered one of the best Portuguese wines and three years later the brand "Monte Velho" was launched. In 1995, after our brands were considered among the best ones, new investments were made. A new area of vineyard was planted and the existent was completely renovated. A dam with 4.000.000 m3 capacity was built, feeding a drip irrigation system that covers all the vineyard. The purchase of Perdigões Estate, with 180 ha of vineyards, the expansion of the cellar and the construction of the wine tourism complex are some of the most recent investments of this dinamic company developing the "Herdade do Esporão". an aroma of lime and tropical fruit. fresh, rich ripe fruit flavors. best with grilled fish, composed salads and Asian dishes.

Intense ruby color. complex fresh and floral aroma with violet, red berries, and toasty notes. aged in new French oak barrels. dense and silky texture in the mouth. I drank this on its own but the pairing suggestions were as follows: "best with ham, roast beef, and feathered game dishes."
