What to Expect

Tannat is a grape most frequently associated with the Madiran region of France, though it has become increasingly successful in South America, particularly Uruguay. It produces a rich, rustic wine with considerable tannins and a smoky, spicy character that adds complexity to its deep tones of black raspberry fruit.

Winemakers Notes

Winemaker: Pablo Fallabrino. With complementing scents of cacao beans and Asian spices, this wine displays significant complexity all around. A powerful palate with hints of blackberry and delicate notes of toast, backed with a long finish of intense dark fruit and firm, but polished tannins, defining a true Tannat expression.

A very tannic wine (surprise!) thats still tight and closed. Its pretty inexpensive, so I'm not sure how it will age. Rather earthy, and fairly simple, but ok.

We're no etymologists, but we think it would be fair to say that the red Tannat grape got its name from the tannins in its skins. Yes, the tannins in this wine are firm - but boy, are they good with anything meat-based, especially if it's grilled. So go ahead: lug the barbecue out to your fire escape and enjoy.

"Tannat? Uruguay? Absolutely. Put any and all previous experiences with Tannat aside—winemaker Pablo Fallabrino has divined the mysteries of this often-rustic grape and crafted a beautifully balanced and considerablyrich red from his estate vineyards, less than an hour from Montevideo. Look for flavors of deep black fruits, freshly crushed green herbs, and barrel spice. Drink now and over the next seven to 10 years." Sommelier Journal, March 2009
