Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet les Perrières 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

94 points (potential) Richard Juhlin. 93 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): ...a striking wine endowed with tons of class and sheer depth. It shows considerable power in its freshly cut flowers, spices and rich Chardonnay fruit. All of the aromas and flavors build effortlessly to a creamy finish layered with smoke, minerals and ash. This is a fabulous wine in every way... 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir... spent 10 months in barrel and a total of four years on its lees... 2014-2026. (Nov 2011)

Not made in every vintage only about 125 cases were produced from a plot of century-old grenache vines planted on sandy soils. This darkly colored wine has compact and rather closed aromas with smoky overtones mingling with blueberry jam. The palate reveals gobs of richly textured pure fruit that coats the tongue. Almost confectionary and viscous the blueberry jam flavors are borderline ripe yet never giving the sense that it is over-the-top. With so much flavor now it is hard to resist yet 5-10 years will bring provide some softness toning down the juicy primary fruit. Chuck Hayward.

A distinctly earthy and rather somber nose of dark berry and sauvage aromas that leads to mildly rustic middle weight flavors that possess good detail if not much refinement or elegance all wrapped in a focused and somewhat linear finish that is dusty and ever-so-slightly dry but not astringent. Burghound.

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a dense purple color as well as an expressive bouquet of black currants licorice kirsch meat juices and hints of spice box as well as lavender. Full-bodied opulent rich and stunningly concentrated it is one of the vintage s finest efforts. This beauty should provide plenty of pleasure over the next 15+ years. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
