- Vincent Dancer, somewhat enigmatically, told me that he doesn't view the 2001 vintage as all that different from 2000 though it had slightly less yield, lower pHs, more length, density and tannic structure. He went on to say that he doesn't believe that it's a great vintage but in contrast to many domaines, he reported very little rot with sugars that came into between 12.7 and 13.1%. Skins were fairly thin and thus the wines have only moderate ruby color, Dancer also observed. The wines were bottled barrel by barrel right before the harvest, without fining or filtration. Note: read more...from a tiny .1 ha parcel of vines planted in 1952 that gave a miniscule 27 hl/ha in 2001 and aged in 100% new oak Heavy wood spice and vanilla completely overshadow what is clear superb fruit, leading to incredibly deep, broad, thick, almost unctuous flavors that are wonderfully detailed, astonishingly intense and the finish lasts for minutes. The classic minerality of Chevalier is present in spades and while I would love to endorse this wine because so many things are indeed right about it, I cannot because the wood is simply over the top and it's unlikely it will ever completely integrate. Those who either like heavily wooded whites or at least don't mind them may very well like the 2001 Chevalier better than I. (hide)
