Viña Ventisquero Chardonnay Clásico 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Founded in 1998 by Gonzalo Vial, owner of Chile’s leading fresh food producer, Agrosuper, Viña Ventisquero winery is one of the most modern in Chile yet manages to retain a ‘boutique’ and innovative outlook. Viña Ventisquero is the first vineyard in Latin America to make use of a state-of-the-art integrated Management System which has led to its acquisition of three certifications (ISO9001, ISO14001 and HACCP) relating to human health and the highest quality and strictest environmental policy. It is all of these things that has enabled Vina Ventisquero to combine traditional methods of viticulture with the most up-to-date means of vinification. This is an easy drinking, rich and complex Chardonnay combining soft pineapple, banana and cream aromas. Medium body, fresh palate, and long finish.

Very good value. Dry, tannins, not too complex.

Bright ruby. Fresh red berries and cherry on the nose, with a smoky licorice note gaining strength with air. A gently sweet midweight that offers fresh raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a kick of zesty acidity. Finishes slightly rigid but with good tangy persistence.

Fairly warm and syrupy on the nose, with bits of earth, leather and baked plum. The palate is a touch underdeveloped and herbal in terms of flavor, but there's no shortage of size. Plump and chewy but basic on the finish, with a returning set of herbal berry flavors that could use more coaching.

Opaque ruby. Dark berries and mocha on the nose, augmented by a subtle smoky quality and a touch of cracked pepper. Round and fleshy, displaying slightly loose-knit dark fruit flavors and no rough edges. Finishes smooth, with modest persistence. I'd have liked a bit more focus. The Root:1 wines are made from grapes grown on their original, ungrafted rootstock, which is pretty normal in Chile but quite rare elsewhere, especially in Europe.

Dill and toasted vanilla mix with lightly crisp red and black cherry fruit. Stays slightly firm, with the dill hint lingering on the finish. Drink now.

Light and forward, with grilled herb, cherry and vanilla notes. Drink now.
