Viña Valoria Rioja 1968

Member Review by tommyvino:

A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Graciano, and 10% Mazuelo from 25 ha of estate owned vineyards. A pale to medium toned brick color. Powerful aged aromas of tobacco, leather, mulling spice, dried meat, prunes, dried cherries and cooked fig. This is a dry, light bodied wine, with lively acidity, weak soft tannins, and a medium long finish. Very flavorful on the palate with stewed tomatoes, prunes, bay leaf, dusty earth, and dried oregano. An excellent wine considering the age, it still has a lot of fruit left and I believe a couple more years of life. This wine is well balanced and definitely drinking well right now. Grilled lamb makes me say oh boy. 4/5

Amazing wine - for something that is over 40 years old to taste so fresh and spot on. Perfect berry notes with sublime leather and minimal wood effects. Not like a typical old school Rioja with tons of oak aging, this tastes incredible. Worth it if you can find it.

The 1968 is my favorite red wine; we just had a bottle for my birthday and my guests enjoyed it as well. I'm very happy to find again (after 30 years)! Cheers.
