Vina Robles Petite Sirah Paso Robles 2009
"The grapes for this vintage were hand picked and sorted for quality in the vineyard. The fruit was fermented in small stainless steel tanks and bins. Over four days, the must was allowed to “cold soak” to extract color and flavor prior to the start of fermentation. Pumpovers and punch-downs took place frequently over a ten-day period before the juice was pressed off and transferred to French oak barrels (40% new) to complete malolactic fermentation. The final blend was chosen after numerous tasting sessions. The Jardine Petite Sirah contributes dense, dark fruit with great tannin structure. The Creston Valley Vineyard adds touches of minerality, while Huerhuero adds dark color, fresh berry aromas and spicy characteristics. A percentage of Syrah from Cammatta Hills brings flesh and body to the blend. Together, they create a wine displaying complexity, structure and balance." -Winery
Bought this wine on a discount - being a fan of the white counterpart. The nose is very Rhone Ranger with black cherry, pomegranate and stewed strawberry. On entry, there is wonderful, powerful red fruit - much like a Rhone-Villages with pedigree. Good finish with residual tannin (some storage for 2-3 years fine). Good grip but quite elegant. Some rusticity but I don't really understand the understated reviews on this wine. Excellent value. 88 points.
The last vintage I had was the 2007. This one is different, the Grenache lightens the load compared to the Petite Sirah / Syrah blend of the 07 vintage, a dark-fruity medium bodied red similar to the typical Australian GSM. 86 pts. and looking forward to the next vintage. It seems like Vina Robles likes to switch things up in their blends to keep it interesting.
