Vina Palaciega Crianza Rioja 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Creamy on the nose with notes of vanilla and mocha over lightly spicy red berry fruit. This is bright and somewhat extracted with wonderful bright acidity but at the same time this has some murky tannins and a bit of a muddled feel in the mouth. The fruit is rather plummy and chunky in the mouth, topped with vanilla tones and tannins that build on the back end. The tannins are rather raw and woody. This is rather modern but in it’s vein quite well made and competes well with more expensive wines. Not my style but a great value. 87pts

Write your review here, and rate the wine from 1 to 5 glasses above.Low and a bit heavy on the nose with a deep core of dark wood undelay over which are layered chocolate dipped cherry fruit with some coconut and mint accents. Light and fresh on the palate with lovely brightness. The tannins are well balanced and add some mouthgrab here to what seems at first to be a rather lightweight wine. With air more fruit emerges in a sort of macerated raspberry/strawberry vein with a lovely bright note, maybe combining a touch of chalk with some unripe strawberry. That unripe strawberry arrives on the finish as well, which is rather long and well structured with a background of aromatic oak helping to support a combination of fresh and dried red berry fruit. This is lovely Crianza, expressive but lean and taut. 88pts

Chalky aromas, with ripe peaches - kind of unusual for a red wine. Nice strawberry fruit acidity.

Addicting and tantalizing, and somewhat musty nose with tobacco and black licorice aromas. The mouth is rich with cherry/strawberry fruit, black pepper, and a really nice balance of tannins with acidity. Mouthwatering finish. I had this with chorizo and it was awesome.

Beautiful ripe and bright fruit on the nose wrapped with some earthiness and dirt lead into a medium-bodied, spicy and complex delight. Firm and round, this would go lovely with any red meat dish

A gamy note gives way to black cherry, smoke and cedar flavors in this supple red. Light, firm tannins and crisp acidity lend focus and grip. Drink now through 2014.

Deep red. Spicy cherry and tobacco on the nose, with a subtle dried herb accent. Light-bodied, sweet red berry flavors are brightened by a mineral note but show only modest depth. Finishes bright and fresh, with dusty tannins and a touch of bitterness. Not bad, especially for the price.
