Viña Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Colchagua Valley Alpha Apalta Vineyard 2015

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Explosively bright aromas are full of fruit and are distinctively grapey yet still hold a dimension of other more classic raspberry and cherry fruit with an underlying heat and spice. Round and full in the mouth, this is quite approachable in style yet still elegant, with ripe red and blue fruit taking the lead and showcasing the spice and oak flavors quite well. There are a lot of reasons to enjoy this wine, and the value is certainly one of them.

One of Chile’s most renowned winemakers – Auriello Montes Sr. – blazed the path of bringing his country’s premium selections to the world when he joined forces with wine industry vet Douglas Murray and partners Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand in 1988. Together, they formed Viña Montes, which became the standard for premium Chilean wines with the introduction of Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon. In the quarter century since then, the company has been instrumental in raising awareness, affinity, and acclaim for Chilean wines in over 100 countries worldwide. Hailing from Apalta in Chile’s Cochalgua Valley, Viña Montes produces 950,000 cases annually through its vineyards La Finca de Apalta (in Apalta); El Arcangel Estate (in Marchigue); and Los Nogales Estate (in Curico). Among the company labels are Montes Alpha “M,” Montes Folly, Purple Angel, Montes Alpha, Montes Classic Series, Montes Cherub, and Montes Twins. In 2004, a new cellar was created at Apalta through an investment of more than US$7 million. Chilean architect Samuel Claro, from the Claro and Swinburn Agency, created the space, which was decorated by Paula Gutierrez, a nationally renowned designer. Here, technology and equipment reside in a peaceful environment incorporating Feng Shui elements – water, air, metal and wood- to encourage harmony and a positive atmosphere, enhancing the total experience and resulting wines. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Montes Alpha is distinctively Chilean (or antipodal) in style, but very French in flavour profile - with perhaps a bit more purity than a Cab dominated Bordeaux A. C. Cedar shank and blackberry dominate the nose and a slightly tart, blackberry entry with oak tannin tends to mark the entry. Finish has some pucker, but quaffable now. You could age for a year or two. 88-89.

Such a high cost performance, tannin lasts longer, ended comfortable bitterness.

Difficult to fault this wine - both in terms of quality and value for money. This wine is an excellent demonstration of what Chile can do really well. If any of your friends or guests are doubtful about Chilean wine, ask them to try this. I recently gave this 18/20. The quality of the wine making shows through - excellent clean, forward berries fruit with a lovely 'New World' capsicum nose, with toasted notes and cassis. Very good finish, excellent balance - drink now. For the red wine drinker, I can't think of a better value wine generally available in the UK. I guess it's selected parcels of young vines. I am not sure if it will age but who cares?

This full bodied wine showed notes of leather, vanilla, chocolate, and cherries on the nose and palate.  The fruit was sweet red and black plums, there was some light baking spices, and firm tannins. This was one of the more full-bodied wines of the tasting and recommended.

Dunkles Rubinrot.

Spicy and woody, with a pungency on the nose. The round palate is full of red-berry fruit and a fair amount of supporting oak. That wood is confirmed on the finish, where things turn a bit buttery and rich. Fortunately some lively tannins and cleansing acids keep things from getting bogged down. A good everyday Cab.

Deep ruby in color, this Cab is ripe with fruit and spices, supported nicely by cedar shadings and firm tannins that give it plenty of backbone.

Deeply colored with aromas of caramel, cinnamon and mint, this full-bodied wine has mellow flavor, depth and an attractive finish. Enjoy with grilled veal chops or chicken livers sautéed with mushrooms and madeira.

Ripe and ready, with a rich, syrupy nose. Just right on the palate, where bold dark-fruit flavors are supported by lively tannins and just enough acid. Spice and coffee on the finish, with ample oak.

From Chile, this affordable red shows dark plum and cassis aromas and flavors, with a touch of smoky bacon fat adding interest. It's chewy and muscular, with a briery note throughout. Drink now through 2001.
