Viña Maquis Syrah Blend Colchagua Valley Lien 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smoky and rich on the nose with a complex melange of mossy, slightly vegetal top notes over black cherry, black currant and blueberry fruit all wrapped up in a coat of cigar box oak spice. Tight on entry and laden with bitter tannins, this is very young and fairly hard today with lots of coffee, creme brulee, and oaky spice flavors but not much in the way of fruit. The finish is all oak, vanilla and wood tannins. There's obviously some fruit here, flashes of blueberry and black currant pop on the back end, but I have to question whether the fruit will outlast these tannins. This offers no pleasure today. 75pts

The Hurtado family planted vineyards at the Viña Maquis Estate in the Colchagua Valley during the early 20th century. The original winery was built in 1927 by owner and engineer, Ignacio Hurtado, when he was just 23 years old. With rivers running on both sides of the estate, the Hurtado family knew this property was special: the vineyards were blessed with a temperate climate and rich soils. For nearly 60 years, Viña Maquis has cultivated grapes that were sold to renowned neighboring wineries. Twelve years ago, the Hurtado family invested in replanting estate with the finest red wine clones available in both Chile and France. In 2002, the family decided to make their own wine out of the terrific grapes in their own backyard. They built a gorgeous, state-of-the-art gravity flow winery and set out to make Maquis Lien, a "Super Chilean" blend using the vineyard’s best red grapes that express the story of that vintage.
