Viña Maquis Syrah Blend Colchagua Valley Lien 2005
Seductively perfumed aromas of black raspberry and smoky Indian spices with floral and mineral accents adding complexity. Juicy gently sweet red berry flavors pack good punch but are fat-free and show no rough edges. Clean and focused on the finish with the red fruit qualities repeating. Boasts excellent clarity and energy. [38% Syrah 32% Carmenere 15% Cabernet Franc 8% Petite Verdot 7% Malbec]
Dark red, w/ black berries and black cherries. Nice 5 grape blend primarily Syrah & Carmenere.
I was expecting a bit more punch from this wine when I saw the blend of grapes. The nose was rather tight and subtle with traces of dustiness and ripe red fruit. The first taste was nicely focused and had a nice freshness and juicy quality. The mid-palate transitioned to cherry flavors and something slightly bitter; perhaps dark chocolate. The finish had a bit of grip and spice, which didn't last very long. I think it would have benefited from decanting, since it opened up the second day.
There's a lot going on with this wine.....sort of felt like an overambitious punch to me.
