Viña Maquis Syrah Blend Colchagua Valley Lien 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Seductively perfumed aromas of black raspberry and smoky Indian spices with floral and mineral accents adding complexity. Juicy gently sweet red berry flavors pack good punch but are fat-free and show no rough edges. Clean and focused on the finish with the red fruit qualities repeating. Boasts excellent clarity and energy. [38% Syrah 32% Carmenere 15% Cabernet Franc 8% Petite Verdot 7% Malbec]

The Hurtado family planted vineyards at the Viña Maquis Estate in the Colchagua Valley during the early 20th century. The original winery was built in 1927 by owner and engineer, Ignacio Hurtado, when he was just 23 years old. With rivers running on both sides of the estate, the Hurtado family knew this property was special: the vineyards were blessed with a temperate climate and rich soils. For nearly 60 years, Viña Maquis has cultivated grapes that were sold to renowned neighboring wineries. Twelve years ago, the Hurtado family invested in replanting estate with the finest red wine clones available in both Chile and France. In 2002, the family decided to make their own wine out of the terrific grapes in their own backyard. They built a gorgeous, state-of-the-art gravity flow winery and set out to make Maquis Lien, a "Super Chilean" blend using the vineyard’s best red grapes that express the story of that vintage. Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Dark red, w/ black berries and black cherries. Nice 5 grape blend primarily Syrah & Carmenere.

I was expecting a bit more punch from this wine when I saw the blend of grapes. The nose was rather tight and subtle with traces of dustiness and ripe red fruit. The first taste was nicely focused and had a nice freshness and juicy quality. The mid-palate transitioned to cherry flavors and something slightly bitter; perhaps dark chocolate. The finish had a bit of grip and spice, which didn't last very long. I think it would have benefited from decanting, since it opened up the second day.

There's a lot going on with this wine.....sort of felt like an overambitious punch to me.
