Viña Magaña Red Bordeaux Blend Navarra Calchetas 2006

Member Review by rictobal:

I am not a big fan of merlot but since this wine was from Navarra I thought I'd give it a try. Boy, and I glad I did! This was a wonderfully spicy red with a hint of tobacco and pepper. It had a long finish and was wonderful with some chorizo. Highly recommended!

The 2007 Magana Merlot is 100% varietal, aged for 18 months in French oak. A glass coating opaque purple color, it surrenders a high-class nose of pain grille, pencil lead, cassis, black currant, and plenty of spice. Layered and succulent on the palate, it conceals enough ripe tannin to blossom for another 5ndash;7 years. It should perform optimally from 2015 to 2030.

The Baron De Magana is a Merlot, Cab, Tempranillo and Syrah blend in the 2007 vintage from the Navarra. The wine is very expressive and complex, with ripe dark fruit, spice and notes of leather.

Aged in 100% new large French oak casks. Opaque ruby. Fragrant, complex bouquet of cherry-cola, incense, minerals and Asian spices. Initially dominated by its wood element, but powerful red and dark fruit preserve flavors come forward with air, along with notes of candied rose and star anise. The floral quality repeats on the sappy, impressively persistent finish. This bottling, which has only been made in 2007, 2005, 2001, 1990 and 1982, would do some damage in a tasting of high-end Bordeaux.

Weingut: Vina MagañaLand: SpanienRegion: NavarraRebsorte: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, MalbecInhalt: 0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 13,5 Vol.%Säuregehalt: 6,1 g/lRestsüße: 2,0 g/lLagerfähigkeit: 7 - 10 Jahre ab JahrgangFassreife: in Barriques gereift (20 Monate)Empfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16-18 °CAuszeichnungen für den Vina Magana Calchetas:95/100 Punkte Robert Paker - Jg. 200590 Punkte Guia Penin - Jg. 200295 Punkte Guia Penin - Jg. 2001 Rotwein > Spanien > Navarra

The 2004 Baron de Magana is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Tempranillo aged for 14 months in 70% new French oak. Inky purple, it has an alluring perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, wood smoke, blackberry, and black currant. Ripe, sweet, and more structured than the Dignus, it merits 3-5 years of additional cellaring and should drink well through 2018.

Inky ruby. Powerful cherry and plum aromas are complemented by deep printer's ink and licorice notes. An extracted, brooding black hole on the palate, slowly revealing bitter cherry and candied licorice qualities after extended aeration. Finishes with good chewy texture and length. There's plenty of material here but this needs to be paired with some funky game or a piece of room-clearing cheese.

The 2003 Baron de Magana, aged 14 months in 70% new French oak, is even more expressive aromatically. It offers an array of cherry, currant, toast, spice box, and blackberry elements. On the palate it admirably combines elegance with power. The spicy fruit is very concentrated and the oak, tannin, and acidity are well-integrated. The nicely delineated finish lasts for over 30 seconds. Although it can be enjoyed now, this wine will age well for 4-6 years and provide pleasure through 2018. It is an outstanding value.
