Vina Falernia Sauvignon Blanc 2010

External Review by Great Wines Direct:

Figs, eldeflower, grapefruit and sage, citrus and melon notes, acidity and long crisp finish on the palate. At a time when Elqui was better known for distilling Pisco and for growing other fruit, Falernia was a true pioneer, led by cousins Aldo Olivier Gramola (who also makes Pisco) and Trentino winemaker Giorgio Flessati. This Italian-inspired revolution has seen the planting of a 320-hectare estate on four sites along the valley, from the sometimes fog-shrouded, low-altitude area near the Pacific right up to more than 2,000 metres above sea level - some of the highest altitude vineyards on earth. Grapes: 100% Sauvignon BlancRegion: Chile / Elqui Valley / Titon VineyardMaker: Giorgio FlessatiNotes: Brilliant yellow colour. Nose is intense reminiscent of figs, eldeflowers, grapefruits and sage. Good character (citrus and melon notes), acidity and long crisp finish on the palate. Very opulent wine.Serve: At 10-12c with light fish dishes, white cheeses such as goats cheese or Mozzarella.ABV: 13.5%

Aldo settled with his family in the Elqui Valley in 1951 and has been producing grapes and wine there since 1975. The Falernia project was born after he met Giorgio Flessati, an enologist working in the Trentino region of northern Italy. This is an innovative venture given that Viña Falernia is Chile’s most northerly wine estate, a considerable distance from the country’s main wine-growing areas. The driving force has been a passion for the wine and the challenge of transforming a tract of desert into a green vineyard with enormous potential for producing premium wines, availing ourselves of the latest technology, the support of agronomist from Chile universities and of world renowned enologists.
