Viña Errázuriz Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve Aconcagua Valley 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

94+ points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): ...82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Syrah that spent 20 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it surrenders an enticing nose of toasty new oak, graphite, scorched earth, cinnamon, clove, violets, blueberry, and blackberry. On the palate, it reveals a suave personality that combines elegance and power. Impeccably balanced, it has the structure to evolve for 4-6 years and should provide pleasure through 2027.

Errazuriz was founded in 1870 in the Aconcagua Valley, 65 miles north of the capital, Santiago, and at the foot of Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the seven summits of the world. Recognizing that this valley was ideal for growing grapes, with its hot, dry summers and cool Pacific Ocean breezes, Don Maximiano Errazuriz sent for the finest clones from France, and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world-class vineyard. Today, the tradition lives on with Eduardo Chadwick, the fifth generation of his family to lead this exceptional estate. Eduardo’s work has been colossal, bringing Errazuriz into a new era where it is acknowledged as a producer of world-class wines, and opened eyes around the globe as to Chile’s incredible and diverse sites. As an estate winery, Errazuriz strives to produce the finest wines through meticulous attention to every stage of viticulture and vinification, from grape growing in the Aconcagua, Casablanca and Curico valleys, to winemaking with the most natural techniques. An emphasis is placed on the delicate handling of the wines, with the aim of producing wines with elegance and complexity. The color is ruby red with black accents. The bouquet is fairly bright, with vegetable and herbal accents mingled with sour berries and balsamic vinegar, nuts. The mouth is full of cherries, blackberries and currants, tobacco, coffee, supported by minerality and well balanced acidity and tannins. Nice finish. Very pleasant, but still very young, and will only get better with age.
