Viña Cono Sur Merlot 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

This is a serious Merlot that is high in intensity with a wonderful dark plum red color. Its fruit expression is impressive with aromas of sweet blackberries and light notes of sweet toasted oak. In the mouth it is sweet and intense with an excellent structure and balanced acidity. Drink young: 2 to 3 years.

Our main goal is to create expressive and innovative wines from one of the world's southernmost wine regions. Cono Sur Vineyards & Winery was founded in 1993, with the vision of producing premium, expressive and innovative wines conveying the spirit of the New World. Our name refers to the company’s geographic position; it represents wines proudly made in South America’s Southern Cone, on whose western edge lies Chile and its gifted wine valleys. Our logo also evokes a freehand drawing of the silhouette of South America. Our quest is to present the world with the finest grape expression and character, from Chile’s varied wine regions. Right from the start Cono Sur applied the newest ideas and technology to winemaking’s traditional methods. Our main goal, therefore, is to create expressive and innovative wines from one of the world’s southernmost wine regions. Read less

Some ash and sun-dried tomato greet the nose along with black currant fruit and some weediness. A bit murky on the palate, with dark and fairly intense flavors that seem a bit muddy and indistinct. There's some nice, slightly jammy black cherry fruit on the mid-palate and some cocoa and mocha oak notes as well before the oak, burnt and slightly bitter flavor takes over on the moderately long finish. This feels a bit too extracted. 82pts
