Basically, really enjoyable. Oaky, smokey, tobaccoey, and leathery. Same on the nose. Very dry, nice tannins. High in alcohol (14%), showed legs in the glass, but little viscosity in the mouth but all this was actually pleasant. A VERY VERY good value at $3.99 at Grocery Outlet (Greenback Blvd. Sacramento, CA). I might be enjoying it more knowing how little I paid for it, but $11 might be a fair price for it.

We enjoyed 2 bottles of this smooth and satisfying wine. We were looking for a nice bottle of red to compliment our filet mignon at Capital Grille and the waiter suggested it. We were extremely happy with the flavors.

Brilliant and deep ruby red color. A powerful and expressive nose, sweet and spicy notes, this wine offers ripe red fruits aromas and jam. Great character and structure in the mouth, it is a bodied wine with a good volume. Soft and firm tannins that provides a high potential of ageing. Creamy, with anisette notes that melts with smoky and chocolate bitter flavors. Suggestions: Decanting is recommended. Serve at 16°C. Excellent to complement cheese, red meats, Wagyu, we emphasize game meats like lamb or boar. - Winery ** SOLD OUT **

Carmenère is a grape that originated in Bordeaux but is rarely planted today - except in Chile, where it seems to have found its niche. The resulting wines are fabulous: for proof, try this dark, full-bodied, and delicious everyday red.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Chocalan estate vineyard is planted on steep slopes and in the piedmont of the Maipo Valley, near parks and lakes in the Metropolitan Region Melipilla province. "Chocalán" is pronounced "Sho-kaw-lann", it means "yellow Blossom", name given to the area by ancient aboriginal tribes, as the yellow blossoms grow wild there. These untouched 340 hectares of countryside benefit from a unique microclimate made up of contrasting luminosity, altitude, Pacific influence, varied soil types and sharp temperature fluctuations. Paired with masterful winemaking and careful nurturing for each vine, these are the ingredients of the winery's success. The Carmenere Reserva, a blend of 85% Carmenere, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, is deep violet red in colour. This wine has perfumes of ripe black fruit, chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla, with spicy hints on the nose, good balance on the palate, firm and structured tannins, full body and a long fruity finish.
