This was a very nice surprise, a big bold wine from South America! The wine is a deep rich purple in the glass, with aromas of leather and tobacco, it is smooth with a nice taste of black currant and ripe berries that feel like a bold and much more pricy cabernet. Overall this was a fun and expressive wine at a much lower price than the taste would suggest!
Caliterra was established in 1996 as a joint venture between the families of Robert Mondavi and Viña Errazuriz. In January 2004 Viña Errazuriz became the sole owners of Caliterra, at the heart of which is the impressive 1000ha Caliterra Estate. The name Caliterra is taken from 'Calidad' spanish for quality and 'Tierra' - land. The wine making philosophy of Caliterra is to produce environmentaly friendly quality wines in the heart of the Colchagua Valley. The focus is around the 1000ha Caliterra estate in Colchagua where 242ha are currently under vine. Crucially a large proportion of this estate, and all new plantings, are on prime hillside sites resulting in high quality fruit and complex wines. Caliterra as a truly International brand, the focus has been on developing export markets as the basis for supporting growth. Today, Caliterra is sold in 50 countries on five continents. This 'Tributo Edición Limitada’ Carmenère/Malbec' is an enchanting limited release and a unique exponent of what South America can give to the world by blending the two most distinctive vine varieties of the south cone. The delicate union between 60% Carménère and 40% Malbec results in a wine with a beautiful deep red colour, fresh aromas, notes of ripe fruit, tobacco and rain forest. The Carménère delivers a silky spicy edge while the Malbec stands out for its strength and sweetness. On the palate, the wine shows a great length, personality and elegance.
