Villa Russiz Tocai Friulano Collio 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Founded in the nineteenth century by the childless Elvine Ritter de Zahony the estate houses both an educational institution and a world-class winery. The profits from the latter go to support the former. Rarely can buying and drinking fine wine have done quite so much good in the world. Yet Villa Russiz is not as one blogger put it a "charity album", worth buying for the story but not the content. Instead, it is one of the northern Italy's greatest wineries. It has won more coveted Tri Biccheri awards from the Gambero Rosso than any other Friuilian winery. Classic Italian grapes like Pinot Grigio and Tocai Fruliano thrive here but there are also fantastic Alpine versions of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot that shine with a rarely found intensity of fruit and crisply pressed structure. This Tocai Friulano shows straw yellow in colour, with grass, pear and nutty hints making an appearance on the nose. On the palate it is fairly sharp, with melon, citrus fruits and nectarine poking through a complex array of flavours. It is very rich, complex and well-structured, a brilliant wine for richer dishes, particularly white meats in cream sauces.

Shows peaches and cream, with hints of almond. Medium-bodied, with good acidity and a mineral, peach pit and lemon finish. Subtle and refined. Drink now.

A variety used more often as a dessert wine, this Tocai has a sweet nose but the wine is dry. It has a creaminess but still shows a very clean minerality. Flavors of citrus and nuts are the prime flavors. A wonderful summer sipper.

The 2006 Tocai Friulano offers plenty of focused, linear fruit with excellent length and a clean, refreshing finish. It is very representative of both varietal and terroir. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2010.
