The Villa Maria story is one of absolute passion. The winery was founded in 1961 by George Fistonich who, through his dedication to quality, has led Villa Maria to become the New Zealand wine icon it is today.

92 points Wine & Spirits: Blended from vineyards in the Awatere and Wairau valleys--some of the lots fermented with added yeast, some without--this is a pure and rosy pinot with spiciness that lasts. A hint of gamey complexity at the end makes this a delicate match for roast quail stuffed with wild mushrooms. (Feb 2011) Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines: ...this is often New Zealand's best-value Pinot Noir. Grown in the Awatere and Wairau valleys, it is hand-picked, fermented partly with indigenous years, and matured for nine months in French oak barriques (typically 40 per cent new). The 2008 is... ruby-hued, medium-bodied, with cherry, plum and spice flavours and ripe, supple tannins. Sweet-fruited, it's an intensely varietal wine that should reward moderate cellaring... (2010)
