Villa Maria Private Bin Gewurztraminer 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Winemakers Comments: This Gewurztraminer is a classic, showing rose petal and spicy Turkish Delight aromas. It is deliciously mouth filling yet has a balancing crispness, which makes it an ideal complement to many food types, including Asian and Indian dishes as spicy as you like. Vintage The 2006 vintage varied across the regions where the fruit for this wine was sourced. Auckland and Gisborne experienced a warm, dry and disease free vintage, whilst Hawkes Bay proved more challenging to viticulturists, with rain during March slowing ripening. Marlborough was the best of the four regions with exceptionally warm and dry conditions leading to an early vintage of ripe and intensely flavoured fruit. Vineyards This Gewürztraminer was blended from fruit sourced from vineyards located in the winegrowing regions of Auckland, Marlborough, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. Gewürztraminer is a difficult grape variety to grow and to consistently ripen to its full potential. Meticulously managed, the emphasis in Gewürztraminer vineyards is on ensuring optimum crop levels, bunch exposure and canopy management. These vines are cropped between 2.5–4kg per vine depending on the site, and are managed on vertical shoot positioned canopy management systems. Winemaking Each vineyard is harvested separately, destemmed, crushed and chilled to 6oC upon entering the press. To aid flavour extraction, the skins and free-run juice are held for a skin contact period of 2-4 hours. Post pressing, the juice is settled for 2-3 days, after which they are racked clean and fermentation initiated. Cool fermentation techniques are used, extending the fermentation period. This results in greater mouthfeel and flavour retention. When the desired amount of residual sugar is obtained the ferment is ceased with refrigeration. The wine is then fined, filtered and bottled. To optimise the purity of the fruit this wine spends very little time on yeast lees post fermentation.

Tough to find a wine better for going with a quick B.Y.O. meal from a spicy Thai restaurant. Just right for a casula friday.
