Villa Maria Cellar Selection Marlborough Pinot Noir 2009
Four and a half glasses
Two and a half glasses
Pinot Noir is my favourite red wine but therefore I am very fussy when it comes to how good this is and although it has that raspberry warmth through and through, it just lacks that certain refinement to be great. Perhaps just a little too much on the fruit and not enough complexity to make it memorable.
The wine presented itself well in the glass from the beginning. No need for decanting. In the glass it is clear and lively, dense, cherry/ruby red with negligible gradient towards the rim with heavy viscosity. On the nose it is aromatic, complex, fully developed. Main aromas would be red and black berries and spice (reminding me of winter smells). Oak is also present but well integrated as are the tannins. On the palate it was quite smooth with a nice long finish. It is mouth-filling, complex and spicy. Acidity was fresh and tannins well kept in check. In layman's terms, it a nice wine that can be matched to tasty food and at the same time it is very smooth and pleasant however not easily overpowered. I would recommend this wine as it is versatile and will please most palates. It is not overwhelming to those who prefer their wines to be elegant however it will also please those who love forward fruity wines.

Slightly herbal in style, with hints of tomato leaf accenting black cherry fruit. This is a crisp, fresh — even tangy — red that perhaps needs a few months to settle down and smooth out. Try it later this year; it should cellar well through 2018.
Stunning pepper and plumeria aromatics kick into rich, ripe black cherry and plum flavors that have a great fleshy quality and enough acidity to keep the flavors vibrant. Drink now through 2016.
Medium ruby-purple colored, the 2009 Cellar Selection Marlborough Pinot Noir displays aromas of red currants and pomegranate with nuances of bay leaf, underbrush and cloves. Medium-full bodied, it has a very good concentration of red berry flavors supported by crisp acid and ripe tannins, finishing long with a pleasant herbal lift. Drink it now to 2015.
