What to Expect

Sauvignon Blanc has a long history in France, and is even one of the parents of the most famous grape of all, Cabernet Sauvignon. Though having achieved high levels of acceptance and popularity in France, Sauvignon Blanc was more commonly associated with specific regions or villages, Pouilly Fume for example. With its arrival in new Zealand, and the country's ability to draw out a level of intensity from the grape, it was poised for bigger and better things. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc is often suggested as an alternative to Chardonnay. Its incredibly bright flavor, snappy acidity and fresh, easy feel are a perfect contrast to the rich, buttery full-bodied style of Chardonnay that is most popular. The citrus, pineapple and kiwi fruit tones most common in New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc are paired with intensely green aromatics that recall gooseberries, freshly cut grass, and jalapenos, offering an unusual and unusually compelling blend of savory and sweet that has found a huge following.

Winemakers Notes

Winemaker’s comments:

The nose has beautiful aromatics of ripe gooseberry, lime, passionfruit and grapefruit. The palate is complex and layered with ripe tropical fruit and an underlying minerality, typical of the Awatere Valley. The wine is gently structured with acidity providing balance and length. The wine will gain further texture with some short term bottle age.

VINTAGE
The 2007 vintage was characterised by moderate yields and ideal growing conditions. Marlborough experienced a poor flowering in December resulting in a tempering of yields. read more...From the end of January to harvest rainfall was low and days were sun-drenched, allowing the fruit to reach optimal maturity in terms of flavour development and balance.

VINEYARDS
The picturesque Taylors Pass Vineyard is located on the north bank of the meandering Awatere River in Marlborough. With soil ranging from silty look over gravels to stony gravels, the vineyard consistently produces ripe and full flavoured fruit.

WINEMAKING
The fruit was picked at optimal ripeness, gently pressed after a period of skin contact and the finest free run juice cool fermented, savouring the superior aromatics.    (hide)
