Villa Collazzi Collazzi Toscana 2006

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

The estate’s 2006 Collazzi is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in French oak. It is a beautiful wine that captures the essence of these international varieties while avoiding the excessive heaviness and oakiness so typical of the genre. Firm yet silky tannins frame blackberries, herbs, cedar, menthol and subtle French oak in this engaging, generous red. The Rosso is already fairly open at this stage, but has the potential to develop nicely over the coming year. It will be a fascinating wine to follow. Anticipated maturity: 2010–2020.

Good full ruby. Aromatic notes of cedar, nutmeg and marjoram nicely complement blackcurrant and syrupy red berries on the nose. Supple, fresh and musky, with a cassis flavor complicated by underbrush, bay leaf and milk chocolate. This boasts terrific energy, density and soil character and finishes ripe, smooth and long, but I find it a bit chunky and almost too big. I actually preferred the ’07, which I would not have thought likely given the hotter growing season.

Gorgeous aromas of raspberry and blackberry follow through to a medium body, with fine tannins and a clean, fresh finish. Very refined. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2010.
