Vignobles Brunier Vieux Telegraphe Red Chateauneuf du Pape 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2010 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape is slightly denser with a deep ruby/plum/purple color followed by notes of crushed Provencal herbs, framboise, kirsch, licorice, pepper and nori (the seafood wrapper used in sushi restaurants). Full-bodied with good acidity and a distinct, earthy/underbrush character. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate"I also had a wonderful 2010 Vieux Télégraphe. The winery has a wonderful reputation. This vintage is still very young but it’s really well balanced. Rich and fine. Strong and elegant at the same time." Angéline Templier, French winemaker at the matriarchal Champagne house of J. Lassalle, as quoted in the NY Times on 12/29/12.

Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Sweet and soft on the nose with early accents of mocha, sweet tobacco leaf, allspice and brown sugar joined by dried bay leaf and black currants. On entry this shows excellent integration and while there is plenty of acidity here, it is held nicely in check by the rich yet not weighty fruit. The oak is well measured as well, yielding a rather seamless wine with attractive herb, toast and blackcurrant flavors; elegant and bright with refreshing acidity on the moderately long finish which ends with cinnamon dusted red berry fruits. This probably won't wow many, but it drinks quite well in a rather classic modern Napa Valley style. Snappy, clean and crisp. 89pts

Tight and dark on the nose, with hints of old wood and cloves along with a dry earthiness, all lurking under blackberry fruit topped with hints of pepper and menthol. Smooth and a bit matte in the mouth, with some dry tannins embedded in a core of plummy fruit that’s framed with hints of meat, coffee and sweet spices. The mouthfeel is a bit foursquare here, with nice black cherry fruit on the finish. 88pts

Nothing very special, but nothing too bad either, more like something to depend on from a wine list when nothing else seems appropriate for a specific experience...similar to the posted Wine Maker's notes: '...full-bodied; layered with blackberry, cherry, dried plums, and a hint of cocoa...'

Dark red color, berry aroma with a bit of leather. Very smooth, strong tannins, high alcohol. Good but unremarkable Cabernet flavor. Bought at Giant in Dec 2013. Enjoyed with Salena's meatloaf while watching Home Alone in front of a nice fire. Bought at Giant in Dec 2013.

Tried this for the first time on 3/22/2013. Delicious. Sandy, who prefers white, liked it better than white wines.

Bright ruby. High-pitched aromas of raspberry, cherry and lavender, with notes of white pepper and anise adding complexity. Very fresh and focused on entry, then deeper and more brawny in the middle, offering sappy cherry and red fruit preserve flavors. This spicy finish displays superb persistence, very good clarity and intense florality.

Coated with unctuous linzer torte, warm plum sauce and pure cassis fruit flavors, while notes of maduro tobacco, mint, green fig and toasted anise flitter throughout. This is lush and dense, but well-harnessed through the finish, with a mouthwatering roasted apple wood note and lingering fresh acidity. Best from 2014 through 2030. 4,200 cases imported. -JM (40% clairette, 30% grenache blanc and 15% each of roussanne and bourboulenc): Pale gold. Bright and racy on the nose and palate, offering lively lemon, orange and pear qualities and zesty minerality. Fleshy but dry, with very good back-end cut and finishing clarity. I like the combination of power and finesse here. This wine has a sound track record for aging and I suspect that this will be a really interesting wine five or six years down the road. ** SOLD OUT **

Performing considerably better than it did prior to bottling, the 2010 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the all-time great Vieux Telegraphes I have tasted in the last 3+ decades. I believe it is even superior to the 2007, which I had several weeks ago. The 2010 boasts a dense purple color along with a sumptuous bouquet of spring flowers, boysenberries, black cherries, black currants, nori (the sushi seaweed wrapper), black olives, licorice and pepper. This full-bodied, meaty, thick, juicy effort possesses a boatload of tannin, but it also has incredible concentration. More massive than I remember from last year, it has put on considerable weight and intensity. Forget it for 3andndash;4 years, and drink it over the following 25andndash;30 years. Kudos to Daniel and Frederic Brunier!

Glass-staining purple. Blackberry, licorice and smoky Indian spices on the nose. Juicy and lithe, with vibrant flavors of black fruits and cracked pepper. This energetic, tightly wound shiraz finishes with very good clarity and spicy persistence. This was aged in one-third new French oak but I dont sense it. Aged for 12 months in French oak, 30% new, the 2010 The Gaffer Shiraz has a very deep garnet-purple color and pronounced black fruits, black currant and mocha nose with hints of bacon, cinnamon stick and loam. Full bodied and richly fruited in the mouth, it is well balanced by crisp acid and a medium level of velvety tannins, finishing long and savory. Drink it now to 2017.
