In Tuscany, where currently there is an ongoing, occasionally crusade-like, war between modernists and traditionalists, it is rare that a wine meets with the approval of both factions. For several years now, Melini�s Chianti Classico Vigneto La Selvanella has managed to pull off that very miracle. And how has it achieved this feat, you may well ask. First and foremost, the wine is obtained from just one vineyard of approximately 46 hectares and from almost 100 percent Sangiovese. This plot is managed to a rigorously modern approach, with more than 5,000 plants per hectare producing around one kilogram of fruit per plant. The vines stand an altitude of 450 to 500 meters above sea level on top of a hill in Lucarelli between Panzano and Radda, which extends a few hundred meters into the province of Siena. The wine shows alluring leather, red berry and herbal aromas, and elegantly balanced wild cherry fruit on the palate with spicy red currant notes. The wine has a plush mouthfeel that is helped by beautifully articulated acidity, soft tannins and long finish. The 2003 vintage is notable for its dense, complex fruit that still retains the wine’s cool climate character without being cooked or overripe.
