Vignerons de Caractère Côtes du Rhône Domaine Mas du Bouquet 2004

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

The top finisher in our February blind French wine tasting! Bold, with complex notes of cured meat, cherry liqueur, forest floor, baking spice, and mineral. A andldquo;teeth-lickingandrdquo; good wine!

The early 21st century has definitely been marked by the information revolution. The world is now a village, and visitors to Vacqueyras are no longer limited to our close European neighbours. The Vignerons de Caractère have always been forward-looking. For instance, we are taking a completely new look at our boutique to make it easier for visitors to discover our wines and our terroir. After extending our cellars, we are now pleased to have an area over 500 m² to age our bottled wines and welcome wine lovers. However, our ambitions do not stop there because in 2009 we are opening a restaurant in the heart of our premises, in a cellar wine formerly used to age wine in barrel. It is now more easier than ever to share our passion for wine and our rich, but fragile terroir, and to highlight the superb products found in our region. To open a bottle of Vacqueyras it to share the love and devotion of 80 families for their vines and precious soil, and the atmosphere of a village famous for its poetic charm. Read less

Medium red. Lively floral and red fruit scents. Pure, racy and light in body, but with plenty of flavor impact. The concentrated raspberry and strawberry flavors are brightened by zesty acidity and joined by fine tannins on the close.

Gigondas has the reputation of being a sort of country cousin to the more sophisticated Chateauneuf-du-Pape. However, for speculative wine lovers, Gigondas can provide wines of fascinating complexity and great value. This rustic, traditional Rhone has hints of tobacco and dried herbs mingle with briary blackberry and plum fruits. A satisfying, medium-bodied red designed to complement almost any cuisine with its array of ripe fruit and savory spice.

It seems that everyone is drinking wines from the Côtes du Rhône these days — and why not? Full in body and flavor, but low in tannin; familiar grapes (Grenache, Syrah/Shiraz) to those who began their wine drinking with Australian wines, but layered and earthy to please hardcore Old World-style wine drinkers. Wines from Gigondas make especially great values: they have the complexity and depth of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but because they’re less well-known, you can pick them up at a fraction of the cost! Top that off with the fact that Domaine de la Maurelle is one of the better known and more respected producers of the area, and voila — the perfect wine for any occasion.

An intense dark-red color with a nose dominated by ripe red fruit with a hint of spice. Full-bodied with velvety tannins, it goes best with red meat and all types of game (wild boar, venison, thrush). Grenache dominates the blend, and aging for 15 months in used oak provides a spicy counterpoint to the ripe fruit. If you have trouble finding thrush at Wegmans, you may substitute chicken.

Gigondas is an appellation located in the Southern Rhandocirc;ne region of France and is considered to be a andldquo;little brotherandrdquo; of the famed Chandacirc;teauneuf-du-Papes AOC. What that translates to is a wine of superior quality at a lower price than its older brothers. With medium tannins and soft fruit on the palate, this Gigondas features the best qualities of the Rhandocirc;ne region. The reddish purple color suggests the elegance of the Candocirc;tes du Rhandocirc;ne, and the body is perfectly balanced with hints of spicebox and a touch of heaviness in the mouthfeel. In the end, despite all comparisons, this expression of the Gigondas appellation stands on its own.
