Showing the riper side of nebbiolo, this balances plum and peach notes with gripping tannin. It shows more depth and minerality with air, the flavors lengthening out to a savory finish. It’s drinking well now, especially when decanted for roast leg of lamb.

Margheria is planted on a hillside west of Serralunga. This muscular ’04 feels tightly coiled; with air, it shows a heady mix of fruit (dried and fresh cherries) and earth. It becomes elegant with time, the sinewy tannins supporting the juicy character of the fruit. Finely made, this is a powerful wine to enjoy over the next decade.

The 2004 Barolo Margheria presents an exquisitely graceful expression of Serralunga terroir as it unfolds on the palate with layers of ripe red cherries, plums, new leather, iron, spices and menthol. It is a big, strapping Barolo, yet it also offers compelling inner sweetness, not to mention stunning overall balance. Tasted blind, it fared exceptionally well among some of the region’s more famous wines. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2024.
