Very ripe and a bit Porty on the nose with prune elements, hung game, barnyard, sea salt and terry notes accenting the base of roasted red and black fruits. In the mouth this is rich yet smooth, with the power of the vintage in evidence. And yet the wine is very well balanced, delivering jammy red berry fruits without tremendous weight. The finish does show off a certain candied note before fading into dried herb and spice notes. Very successful for the vintage even though this strikes me as over-ripe. 91pts
Well structured, complex with smooth, long finish
The 1998 is rated to be amongst the best vintages, and this bottle was a complete contrast to the 2004. It was still rife with cherry and figs with gamey and mushroomy overtones. It accompanied the entrees (guinea hen, lamb, fois gras, seared scallops) equally well. Thankfully, we saved just enough for the cheese course. This wine should keep well for several years.

The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a single-vineyard wine very fine but from a good instead of an excellent vintage. The nose though powerful is more mineral and herbaceous and though there are size and concentration to spare on the palate the quality of the extraction and tannins is not at the level of the outstanding vintage which followed. But the weight and grip on the finish are impressive. Drink: 2006-2017. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
Medium garnet hue. Complex and exquisite aromas of dried currant with hints of truffle cigar box and crhme de cassis. The palate is elegant and refined centered around a core of red fruit truffle minerals and leather. The tannins are smooth as silk. This is elegance and finesse all the way. Now is the absolute perfect time to enjoy this beauty. Neil Mechanic.

Undoubtedly one of the wines of the vintage despite the failure of its Cabernet
Franc. Unusually the '98 blend is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Richly
concentrated, this wine displays both wonderful purity of fruit and a fine
expression of terroir.
