Vieux Telegraphe Cdp 01 Syrah Gran France 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc After ageging for 18 mounths in new oak barrel, the Vieux Chateau Certan 2001 can now assert itself as an exceptional vintage. Its dark ruby-red colour, with flashes of crimson, reveals the bluish the fringe of a young wine.

Really awesome when first released, so much so that I remember it in 2010. Rich, perfectly balanced fruit and tannin, lovely smooth mouth feel, and long fragrant finish. One of the few California cabs I really like - with properly balanced tannins so that you don't feel like you're chewing on barrel innards.

A Napa claret, this blends cabernet sauvignon (70 percent) and merlot (29 percent) with a hint of petit verdot. The winersquo;s austere red fruit has a tartness that almost pales to peach. Tannins darken it, while the firm, lovely fruit persists, weighted for roast veal or the dark meat of game birds.

Surprisingly tannic and closed for an rsquo;01 Napa, but this may be a stylistic decision. Itrsquo;s a very fine wine, well balanced and rich in oak and blackberry-cherry fruit. Totally dry, but those tannins really lock up the flavors. Best after 2010.

The 2001 Magnificat is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. It displays more force, depth, and delineation than the 2000, in addition to copious quantities of toasty oak, sweet, chunky, chocolaty, black currant flavors, and a medium-bodied, easy-going personality. It should drink well for a decade.

The Cabernet Sauvignon offers up a briery, cedary, tobacco leaf-tinged black currant fruit flavor in a medium-bodied, slightly oaky style. There are 100,000 cases produced of this reliable, but unexciting red. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Medium-full ruby. Youthfully austere aromas of bitter cherry, raw currant, tobacco leaf, licorice and shoe polish. Dense, fresh and concentrated, with cool black fruit flavors complicated by an herbal nuance. Quite backward today, but already shows l... Stephen Tanzers IWC. The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau is gorgeous, structured, impressive. Full-bodied and backward, with great depth, purity, and heady aromatics...a sweet perfume of salty sea breezes, seaweed, melted licorice, kirsch liqueur, creme de cassis, and i...
