I have been buying the wines of Le Vieux Donjon for well over a decade, and I continue to be impressed by how consistently classic they are. The 1995 Châteauneuf-du-Pape displays an opaque purple color, followed by a pungent, fragrant nose of over ripe black-cherries, sweet, barbecue smoke, roasted herbs and meats, and an enthralling chocolatey, cherry component. Thick, unctuous, and powerful, with layers of flavor, this wine is obviously made from extremely ripe fruit and low yields. These wines are bottled with no filtration. Don't miss them.

Deep ruby cast. Moderately full-bodied. Full acidity. Moderately extracted. Moderately tannic. Pepper, red fruits, minerals. Engagingly aromatic, with a lean and firm quality that reveals impressive, mineral depth and persistence through the finish. A "traditional" style in the best sense of the word.

Super-rich and full-bodied, with an exotic, over-ripe quality, this large-scale wine was obviously made from extremely ripe fruit and low yields... a potential blockbuster for the vintage.

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape is dominated by Grenache with major amounts of Mourvedre, Syrah and other authorized varietals. Its dense ruby/plum color is followed by aromas of smoked meats, roasted Provencal herbs, a gamy character and lots of kirsch, black currant and blue fruits. Rich and full-bodied, it is softer than most young vintages of Vieux Donjon tend to be, and should drink well for 12ndash;15 years.

Bright violet. Deep aromas of cherry, black raspberry, garrigue and earth. Broad, spicy and sweet, with a velvety texture and lush dark berry and lavender pastille flavors. Finishes sappy and sweet, featuring fine-grained tannins and excellent thrust. This alluring wine looks like it will be approachable young.

Beautiful, silky Châteauneuf terroir aromas: leather, game, truffles, plum, dried herbs, lead pencil. It all swirls around in the palate, a deeply satisfying blend that surprises and brings to mind something as simple as a walk in the country on a rainy autumn day. Supple tannins on the balanced finish. Drink now through 2010.
