This had the most complex nose of the night, filled with spicy sweet/tart red fruit, fines herbs, a little beef jerky, and dustings of coffee and black pepper with a developing olive note. Smooth in the mouth, this seemed a little soft next to its peers, with a palate that showed fine dark berry fruit framed by flavors of olives and herbs that recalled the nose but lacked a bit of focus and definition. Perhaps with a hint of brett as well, as there seems to be a touch of band aid here. The finish shows fine length and finesse, leading me to believe that time will be kind here, giving at least the impression of age-worthiness. 89pts

The 2010 Le Vieux Donjon showed a beautiful and highly expressive nose with aromas of black raspberry jam, charred meat, chalky minerals, dried floral notes, and wild herbs. On the palate it had velvety textures with a dark brooding feel yet somehow juicy and fresh with ripe black fruits, exotic spice, Espagnole and black pepper in the background. The finish was long with dark palate staining fruits and a flex of imposing structure. (94 points)

With respect to the red wines, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape (75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre and Cinsault) exhibits lots of tapenade, new saddle leather, garrigue, black currant, black cherry, smoke, earth and gamy/meaty notes. A brilliant effort that ranks alongside the 2007, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts abundant notes of black cherry liqueur interwoven with black currant, blueberry, spring flower, roasted herb, licorice, pepper and bouquet garni characteristics. Full-bodied with good acidity, terrific purity, a fleshy mouthfeel and a long finish, it should be even better in 4ndash;5 years and last for two decades or more.

This takes a decidedly old-school approach with its very distinctive bay leaf and juniper notes leading the way, along with roasted mesquite and alder wood. The core of steeped black currant, roasted plum and blackberry fruit waits in reserve while the long, ganache- and tar-filled finish has nice rugged grip, with a peppery echo. Should cellar wonderfully. Best from 2015 through 2030.
